    Consumer Buyer Behavior


    If you own a small business, even one you run out of your home, you have to think about what is going on nationally. You may think that what people are doing across the country has nothing to do with you, you have to learn about what consumer buyer behavior means for anyone in business. This is because people are basically the same everywhere, though they do all have slightly different wants and needs, but the business side of it remains the same. Research in this area is vital information for any business if they want to succeed and make it through the tough times.

    The most important thing you can get from research about consumer buyer behavior is when it is time to adjust. When spending on a consumer level is down, people are beginning to be a bit more picky about what they want to buy, and even what they can afford to buy. When economic times are tough, and a business does not adjust to what the public still wants, they may find they are on the losing end of the equation. Adjusting does not mean total change, but it does mean putting some thought into business practices, inventory, and even ways to cut costs all the way around.
     


    Consumer buyer behavior can set or break the trends that retailers are trying to pull off. Those running small businesses need to know what is working with higher end and bigger stores. This will dictate what works for them. If you see, for example, that consumers are suddenly wanting more clothing and other basics, but not wanting to spend money on the extras, you can tailor your inventory to that a bit. Consumer buyer behavior can also help a business person understand what they need to do for promotions and what to make down for sales purposes.

    I have found, as a writer, that things like consumer buyer behavior means more to what I do than I thought. When people stop spending, the extras are what go first. Those that pay for writers for web pages, for example, may think to put that aside if they think money will be tight. If people dont buy as much online because consumer buyer behavior is indicating just that, the number of paying jobs for writers, photographers, and even web page designers may go down. It may even go down substantially. That is why I keep and eye on things, and so should anyone else with their own business no matter how small it might be.
