The problem is that there is so much variety among after market parts. Some so-called discount auto performance parts are actually nothing but junk. If you make the wrong purchase, you might end up with something that is not of the same quality as the parts the car came with. Other times, however, you can actually find discount auto parts that are of a better quality than the stock gear. Although there are some resources that will help you out, the only way to really learn is to know someone with experience in the automotive industry.
I have a good friend who helped me pick out discount auto parts. He has an uncanny eye. When I was having serious trouble of my engine, for example, he suggested that I replace it. Although I had thought to rebuild it with used auto parts, he told me that I could find a whole engine in the junkyard for less money than it would cost to replace all the things that had gone wrong with mine. It turns out that he was right! I found a big, solid, Chevy engine, did a little bit of work on it, and had it working like new inside of a month!
Of course, with auto discount parts, like with anything, if it seems too good to be true it probably is. I have a friend who bought a new alternator for his car for next to nothing. It was supposed to be even more efficient than the original one it had come with, and it cost about half as much! Needless to say, he was sorely disappointed when it refused to pump out enough power. Within six months, it died.
