Before the Internet, many companies relied on direct mail advertising to get the word out about products, sales, and special events. The Internet slowed some of that, but it is still something that companies use, and political figures use this method as well. What can be sad is the amounts of this type of mail that we still get each week, and it can be annoying when it is not something that we have asked to receive. If you want to stop receiving junk mail of this type, there are a few things you can do.
When it comes to catalogs, most that come to you are from companies with which you have done business, but that is not always the case. If you want to stop receiving junk mail that comes in catalog form, it is often very simple. You have to call or write to the company and ask that you be taken off of the list. When you do business with someone, you may notice there is a way to opt out of receiving mailings from them. Be sure that you click that box and the catalogs should not come. You may not get sales flyers either.
What bothers some who want to stop getting junk mail in their mailbox is that they can be getting things from companies that already have their business. I know that we get flyers and letters from our current auto insurance company asking us to sign up. I know its an automated list, but it seems like a huge waste of paper and postage. If that happens, you can stop receiving junk mail simply by asking them to stop. They may even agree its a waste when you are already a customer.
For other types of mail, there may not be a lot you can do about it. When you register to vote, you are going to get stuff from politicians. You may even not mind this, as it can help you understand what is going on locally and can help you decide which way you wish to go when voting. You can try to contact many companies when trying to stop receiving junk mail, but it can be a time consuming process. At the very least, getting some of it to stop can be a relief, even if some still comes from time to time. Your postal carrier may even thank you for it.
